100% of Sapalta’s wines are made right here in the Finger Lakes. Bold choice, I know, but we really love these locally made wines. It is the largest draw to the area and it is something we are really passionate about. Over the course of 2019, Sapalta has listed over 50 wines on our menu or in our wine shop. As start to work on our 2020 wine menu, I thought I would share our top 10 best sellers in 2019. Cheers!
To be honest, I personally purchased several bottles of this, so I may have skewed the results, but this is a fantastic wine, crisp wine that just went unbelievably well with our seared halibut. This wine is also a very deserving Bronze Medal Winner.
I keep calling this “Juicy Sweet”. While I tend to steer towards drier wines, from time to time I wander into the sweeter neighborhoods. And when I do, it is often with Fulkerson Juicy Sweet.
The Farm describes this as “vibrant, vivid, and lengthy” and I think that is a great description.
I have to admit I am new to the wide world of rose. It took some coaxing, but I have tried more than a few. We actually sell a ton of rose. It is in our top 5 varieties. Did not see that coming, did you? I knew we sold a lot but did not know we sold that much. And this is our top seller. If you like Pinot Noir, you’ll like this because that is basically what it is. I lighter Pinot with the crispness of a white.
This was the big surprise for me. Not because this isn’t a great wine, but our biggest category is Riesling. 14% of our wine sales are Rieslings. But only 2 Rieslings made it on this list. This is our best selling dry Riesling and it is great. Kudos to Forge as this is a really competitive variety for us.
The second best selling red on the wine menu. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Blaufränkisch, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. It is has a juicy berry taste with a nice spicy finish. There are two blend’s on this list and it would be hard to pick between the two as my favorite of our reds. Just a great wine and goes great with either of the steaks.
I have a special place in my heart for Sheldrake. It was one of the first wineries I visited in the Finger Lakes to make me think, “Wow! That is really, really good.” Also one of my first FLX wine purchases. This Pinot Gris is another go to for me when ordering fish. Which I do. Often.
There are 3 reds that dominated this list. This is our best selling Cab Sauv. One of our drier wines and a fantastic red to go with the Sapalta Steak or the smoked porterhouse (one of our best selling menu items…but that is a story for another time).
No surprise to me that this was on the list. Partly because it is one of our most popular wines by the glass. Also because it is used by the kitchen in a number of recipes like the gnocchi. It is far and way our best selling chardonnay, the only on this list.
Tip of the hat, Hosmer. This Sauvignon Blanc won “Best In Class” at the 34th Annual NY Wine Classic and we luckily had several cases and sold every single one. Amazing wine and here’s hoping we can get more because I think we sold everything we had.
